Looking for Reliable Information on the Internet

 

Check out the domain name.
    Domain names provide clues as to the source of the information.

Search for information about the Web page author.
    Does it tell why they are qualified to write this information?
    Can you contact them?
    Is there reason to believe that they could have a strong opinion that
        they might be promoting?

When was the site last updated ?
    Does it tell how current the information is?

Is there a bibliography (list of resources)?
    If some of the resources look questionable, check on them.
    Click on Web links.
    Try to verify book information at sources like Amazon.com.

Use more than one resource!
    Consider beginning with a book.
    Start with a source you know is reliable.
    Get background and additional information from
        encyclopedias and other books.
    Look for several Internet sites on the topic.

Question what the site says.
    Ask yourself if it looks right and makes senses with
        what you already know.
    Give information  your DUH! test.
    Ask a teacher, an expert, a librarian, etc.
