Require students to bring in their favorite book, a prop, and come up with an original way of advertising the book for milk mustache pictures.Cynthia CaseyMount Olive Middle School in Bud Lake, NJ

Import milk mustache read pictures into Power Point to make  nice "slides" complete with borders, logo, etc. Print out the slides (8.5 x 11). If you have a poster machine, use it to enlarge the slides into big posters.

Make a picture of a cow reading a book on a piece of styrofoam -like material.  Leave a hole for the "face" of the cow.  Have the students put their faces in the hole to have a cow picture taken.

Have each art or homeroom class decorate a cow shape.

Save Holstein-patterned Gateway computer boxes for decorations. They could be used to hold or display prizes, books, contest slips, etc.

Draw a different teacher's name at the end of each day of Right to Read Week.  The teacher drawn will have to wear a cow costume the next day.  The costume will need to have the face open.  The teacher can wear face paint to complete the costume.

Moo-llennium "got books?"

    * For every 20 minutes of reading, students submit a chance in the spotted milk jugs in the library to win a book from the upcoming Book Fair.
    * got milk? Mustache Contest Students match teachers and staff with their favorite books to win - what else? - milk chocolate. Pose faculty/staff with book covered with black paper. Read clues on the PA each day for matching the reader to his/her book. Post clues by the display.
    * Contest promotion:  Prepare a gallon size Zip-Loc for each teaching team which included a painter's cap with felt cow spots, fun size milk chocolate bars, and a flyer of your reading events. Each bag should have a routing list of team.  Ask them to "Pass the bag, pass the hat, pass on the info!"
o Wear the cow cap for a bit. When students notice bovine head wear, encourage them to a part of the library's current reading events...
o  For your assistance, enjoy a treat. (Recent research reveals benefits of chocolate...)
o Check name off, pass on...
o If the chocolate disappears prematurely, we'll be udderly appalled and will dust for hoof prints to see who is herding milk chocolate.
o Return bag with hat to library at the end of "got books?" Week.
    * To end "got books?" Week, have library staff wear cow blazers.  (Ours were a cheap find in discount store - awful polyester white with black spots.)
    * Have decorations at the library entrance  (consider asking parent volunteers) - hanging cows on foam board, cow spot valance, giant milk carton. etc.

Check your local supermarket for  milk or cookie displays to display paperbacks.

Marcia Waters used the "got books?" theme to teach "a unit to my 1st and 2nd graders (basic library skills and literature appreciation themes) using a library mouse.
She made her debut during book week, and introduced a cheering cow - the cow came complete with ringing bell, a hats off (literally) to books and the cheer ' Got milk, Got cookies, Got books?  Got it made!' The cow told jokes and just added a special thematic touch to our puppet show.

This really tied our theme to a cheering session with young readers - we had discussed the theme in prior weeks and even practiced the cheer."

Have a "hoe down" with square dancing, singing, poetry readings, and prizes. If you can not locate a cow to visit school, have students throw whipped cream "pies" at the principal instead. Line the walls with cow pictures for every book read during your "got books?" event.

Decorate the entire school with large and small cow spots. (With white walls this is very effective!)

Use a light color make-up cover stick to paint "milk mustaches" on staff members for one day. The lightest color appears "creamy white"!

Create a cow resource packet for teachers prior to your "got books?" event. Include clip art, patterns for badges for students, available books, poetry, songs, lesson ideas, art, Web sites, etc. Attach a candy "Cow Tail" to each resource packet.

Do milk mustache read pictures with teachers/staff members in groups.

If you have a courtyard have a school spend the day in the school courtyard.
