Internet Definitions

Internet:
The Internet is a world wide network of computers that connect by using similar protocols. This system provides access to databases, e-mail, discussion and news groups, programs and other computer files, and other forms of information and communication.
World Wide Web: (WWW)
A system that allows documents with graphics, text, videos and sounds to link/connect to other resources through the Internet, using Hypertext.
Server:
A computer or program that provides access to other computers or systems.
Hypertext:
Text, usually highlighted by color or underlined, that creates a link to other resources on the Internet or within a Web page or Web site. Graphics can be hyperlinks also.
Link:
A WWW connection from one location to another. Links can be to other resources on the Internet or within a Web page or Web site.
URL:
Stands for Universal Resource Locator. It means address.
Browser:
The program used to "surf the net". It "reads", opens and displays World Wide Web hypertext documents. Netscape Communicator and Microsoft Explorer are two common browsers.
Hits:
The items/links found when using a search engine on the Internet.
Home Page:
The opening page of a series of connected pages on the WWW. The pages as a unit are called a Web site.
Bookmarks:
This browser feature allows you to create links to visited Internet sites. These are great for keeping a record of useful or favorite Web sites.
FAQ:
Stands for Frequently Asked Questions.
Download:
Transferring information from the Internet to your computer.
Newsgroup:
An electronic form of bulletin board where messages are left for others to read. "Typical" messages might be questions and information. Must have a newsreader on a browser to participate in a newsgroup.
Listserv:
These automatic message services deliver e-mail to subscribers.
